Hello everyone and welcome to my baking blog! First off I want to thank everyone who has followed me as I made my move from my initial blogger website to this fantastically awesome new wordpress site!I love you all and thank you for your support!. When I first started my baking blog last year, I joked about being a complete and utter “blog virgin.” That’s right! Not only had I not ever had a blog, I had also never even looked at a blog. Well, I am slightly embarrassed to tell you that after almost a year of writing my own blog, I still would not call my self a savant on what constitutes a good blog. I can only hope that what I was talking before, and plan to continue doing, was slightly interesting and that the recipes will keep you coming back. Once again, I have to say that I probably should have filmed the process of me creating this new and improved blog and posted it online, as that footage would have been a comedy show in itself. You know, all the experts say that I grew up in the generation of technology and therefore I should know how it works… well, I am just living proof that the experts were wrong, because I really don’t know as much as I should. I literally just installed the pinterest app on my phone three weeks ago and still don’t know how it works… enough said.
I guess I should start by telling those who are new to this blog a little bit about myself and why I decided to start posting delicious baking recipes for the world to share.
That is me in the picture, literally getting ready to jump off of a bridge… it’s okay, I was strapped to a bungee cord and I had the support of three beautiful Australian men up in Whistler (naturally they were Australian). I thought telling you this would help to give you some sense of the kind of personality that I possess, however, I know think that it just makes me look a little bit crazy. None the less, I jumped off the bridge and it was the most liberating moment of my entire life. So why am I boring you with this story? The answer to that question would be that I think it is a good metaphor for the leap of faith I am taking my opening up about my deepest passions and dreams online for the whole world to see. Wish me luck, here I go!
First off, I am a 23 years old and I live in Vancouver British Columbia. Oh yes! I was born and raised here and love where I live (although I could live with a little less rain) – spoken like a true Vancouverite 😛
I have my associate of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University, where my two main areas of study were psychology and history. Similar to a large percentage of the population, the job I have now has absolutely nothing to do with what I studied in school. You see, originally the plan was to become an elementary school teacher, hence why I was working towards by Bachelor of Arts Degree. However, after three years I realized that what I was studying and training to do for the rest of my life was not necessarily something I was truly passionate about. (Don’t I wish now that I had thought about that before I started my post secondary education.) So I decided to take a brake from school and pursue the things in life that I am confident that I love… such as baking, personal fitness, interior design, and working with people.
Of course I soon realized that if I was no longer in school, I could not use the starving student excuse any more and I would actually need to have a source of steady income. Which brings us to… what I am doing with my life right now. I currently work in the Events Department at a Downtown Vancouver Hotel in what is possibly the most amazing working environment of all time. I work with the most hard working, kind and fun people and I am so lucky to be a part of that environment.
I have a wonderful boyfriend, whom I have been with for over seven years now. He is my rock and has the most amazing outlook on life. He has always encouraged me to follow my dreams and to pursue the things in life that make me happy. So that is exactly what I am doing right now with this blog. After my year and a half of soul searching (this is a slight over exaggeration, but I like to sound interesting), I have found that baking is my true passion, and baking is what I want to pursue in my life. Sharing delicious, homemade baked goods with people around me has always been my favourite thing to do and I hope that one day, that is exactly what I will be doing for a living. They say that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life… I want to be living be that philosophy and I know that baking would help me to achieve that.
I have a very tight knit family and I truly believe that one of the main reasons we are so close is because we were brought together at the dinner table by my mothers amazing home cooked dinners and desserts every night. Because of this, I am a strong believer in the power of great food having the ability to bring people together and engage us in a way that is hard to come by in today’s world. As you can probably guess, everything I know about baking is knowledge passed down from my mother and her knowledge was passed down from her mother. Their most important principle was that food is at its best when it is home-made, and I could not agree more!
So after years of bringing my home-made baked goods to school, work and special occasions for my friends and family; after hearing rave reviews for my baked goods; after countless cookies, cakes, cupcakes, muffins, tarts, cheesecakes, bars and pies; and after years of my friends bugging me to start up a little baking blog, I finally took the plunge last year! At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to go to school for baking and pastry arts and eventually own my own little bakeshop. But that is in my ultimate fantasy dreamland! So for now, my goal is to illustrate to people the benefit of baking at home, not only because of the amazing taste, but also because of the benefits baking can bring to your family and your soul. After a long hard day at work, I can always turn to my mixing bowl, throw in a cup of butter, sugar and eggs to whip up something that is beautiful and delicious to restore my faith in the world. This is what I hope to pass along to everyone that stumbles upon my blog.
So stay tuned for recipes, tips, photos and more! I hope you enjoy what I have to offer, and I thank you in advance for reading and for your support!
